Empathizing and commiserating is exactly how I used to get by with taking hundreds of dollars from drunks while working as a Table Games Dealer at the two casinos I where worked [recursively] AND _kept_ them as regular customers, some of which even _followed_ me to the second casino when I 'moved'! I was told on more than one occasion by more than one person that I was one of the few Dealers, if not the only one, they had that actually treated people like people. Of *course*, in a retail situation, I would use that very same tactic and then once the person calms down, I would then go about finding a solution adding the diversion tactic as one possible solution. @ The whole group. @David Nicol ....& whomever else is interested, This is nothing new. I ran into it way back in 2003. I was applying for a retail position when I was asked how I would handle a person who came into the shop raving mad because of a negative experience with it. I answered that I'd try to calm them down by diverting their attention to something in the shop that was more positive and, therefore, give them a positive experience there to replace the negative one they had felt. I didn't get the J.O.B., I think I was "over qualified". But, several months later they went out of business, anyway. So my feelings weren't all that hurt after I saw that. LOL! Then of course there's the people who are genuinely upset about being treated like stupid, lying, cheating, stealing cattle and have had a negative experience because of some employee, who doesn't give a fig, treating them like lying, cheating, stealing cattle with money to be relieved of. Anyone found a better way to balance it? I've been asked this question regularly at job interviews lately and I don't recall getting asked it during prior job search efforts. Have other people been fielding the same question, or am I on some kind of HR "difficult people" watch list? (slight hyperbole) discuss.

I have little experience with Linux in general. I have installed and configured Debian, Red Hat, Fedora, and I have completely failed an install of Gentoo. I can use Linux command line for simple tasks, but I want to dig into the guts of Linux and take advantage of features I simply can't get in Windows. I have ZERO knowledge of the C programming language, but I do have interest in learning how the kernel works. I would like to attend the June 3rd meeting, but unfortunately I need to work on-site during that time... Could you tell me more about KCLUG activities? I've tried looking into some audio files and gallery photos but everything seems to be unavailable at the moment. What takes place at a DemoDay vs an Installfest? I hope to hear from you soon!
