London Stock Exchange dumps Windows for Linux

Vaughan-Nichols When it comes to business computer systems, nothing is more mission-critical than the massive trading software systems that underlie stock markets. A failure of an hour here can mean billions of dollars of lost trades. The LSE (London Stock Exchange) learned that the hard way when their .NET/Windows Server 2003 trading platform died<http://blogs.computerworld.com/london_stock_exchange_suffers_net_crash>like a dog early last September. The new LSE management is not going make that mistake again. This October, the LSE purchased MillenniumIT<http://www.ibspublishing.com/index.cfm?section=news&action=view&id=13440>and will be switching its stock exchange programs to the company's Linux-based Millennium Exchange software<http://www.millenniumit.com/capital_market_solutions/index.php#>. I saw this move coming. While the LSE never officially announced that its Windows and .NET stock trade software TradElect was the root of its September failure and perpetually slow performance, it was an open secret in the City -- London's equivalent to America's Wall Street -- that that was the case. Indeed, it was this technology flop that lead to the LSE CEO Clara Furse leaving the Exchange<http://blogs.computerworld.com/london_stock_exchange_to_abandon_failed_wind…>in July. The new CEO, Xavier Rolet, immediately decided to get rid of TradElect and started shopping for other platforms. Friends of mine in the City tell me that the LSE immediately started considering a Linux-based solution. It doesn't take a genius to see why. The world's fastest stock exchanges, like New York's International Security Exchange, run on Linux<http://blogs.computerworld.com/14637/linux_powers_worlds_fastest_stock_exch…>. In a world of high-frequency trading<http://www.bloomberg.com/apps/news?pid=20601109&sid=aBBFQ6thBuiY>where a millisecond really can mean the difference between profit and loss, stock exchanges can't afford to be slow, never mind actually going off-line. The platform itself is built primarily on Linux, but Solaris and Cisco networking also play important roles. The back-end database engine is based on Oracle. The LSE expects to see transaction speeds drop from a claimed best speed of 2.7 milliseconds -- which was rarely, if ever, seen under TradElect -- to the Linux solution's claimed 0.4 millisecond speed. It wasn't just raw speed though that brought the LSE to Linux. Linux is cheaper<http://www.computerworlduk.com/community/blogs/index.cfm?entryid=2568&blogi…>, a lot cheaper, for high-end servers. According to an IBSJ report, David Lester<http://www.ibspublishing.com/index.cfm?section=news&action=view&id=13440>, director of information and technology at LSE, said that compared to the annual bill of $65 million for TradElect, MillenniumIT was a bargain at a purchase price of $30 million. The LSE predicts that moving to Linux will give the company an annual cost savings of at least £10 million ($14.7 million) from 2011-12. In addition, "The new technology is a lot lighter, nimbler and easier to install" and will also enable faster releases. The LSE hopes to close the deal this month. The transition from TradElect to the MillenniumIT is expected to take up to 18 months. Lester hopes to get it completed faster than that. In the end, the LSE and its traders will profit from this move. As Steve George, director of corporate services at Canonical<http://www.canonical.com/>(the company behind Ubuntu <http://www.ubuntu.com/>) told me when we talked about the deal. "When performance and stability matters, as they do in business, Linux is the positive choice. This move will be good both for the LSE and its customers and to the wider family of Linux."

Anybody want a great big server?

I have a big (and heavy) server in my basement that I'm not using. I think it currently has some ancient version of Gentoo on it but given this audience I'm guessing that will not be kept. The name of the game with this beast was redundancy...it's not too impressive by today's standards, but it should be able to keep ticking through quite a few invocations of Murphy's Law. Dual P3 Server Includes: - Intel SC5000 chassis (may be able to find hardware for rackmount...currently set up for desk side) - Supermicro P3TDE6 motherboard - Dual Pentium 3 850Mhz CPUs (runs stable @ 1.13GHz) - 512MB ECC Registered PC133 RAM (256MB stick x 2) - U160 capable hot-swap drive bay (holds up to 5 1inch drives) - Qty. 5 - 18GB 10k RPM Ultra2 drives - SCSI CD-ROM - SCSI CD-R drive - ATI RAGE XL video card - Integrated 10/100 Intel NIC - Integrated U160 dual channel Adaptec SCSI adapter - 2 64-bit/66MHz PCI slots - 4 64-bit/33MHz PCI slots - Redundant 350W power supply Given the age, the weight, and the probable distance to drive to pick it up, I'm saying it's free to a good home. Missing Robot

A prominent member of Kansas City's robot community had his robot stolen out of his car recently. Installing Linux on Acer One

I was able to install Ubuntu on the Acer One after repartitioning, reformatting, and reinstalling the Ubuntu Live CD on the flash drive. I think I must have screwed up the MBR with syslinux. Works perfectly now. Excellent netbook.

MythTV questions

I finally got my network run over to the MythTV box a couple days ago. I ran updates on the PC and added a couple myth plug-ins that I did not get a chance to choose at install. I know this is weird, but I don't have a TV capture card in this PC. I have digital satellite and like digital cable, the tuner in the cards are not capable of getting all the channels and require a descrambler box. I don't want to mess with an IR blaster and training the family how to use the device. What I do want to do is start getting torrents of TV episodes to the box. Is there anything in MythTV to download torrents? I saw something about RSS feeds, but haven't a clue about getting that going. I think I loaded a myth plugin for a feed reader. How do I find the feeds or what is the best way to go about finding episodes of a couple shows like Heroes, Mentalist, Dexter, Robot Chicken, etc. including past seasons and getting them into the MythTV database/interface? I'm not sure that a torrent program loaded, so I'll have to verify that or get one. I've downloaded torrents before, but the key is to get them into MythTV to make it easier for everyone else. The other thing is that I loaded a plugin for using game emulators within MythTV, called MythGame. Do I have to load the emulators separately via the apt-get process? Any idea how to import the game ROMs. Someone gave me a couple burned CDs full of game ROMs a few years ago and as soon as I find them, I like to get those classic games running. Brian Kelsay
